Menstruation can often become very frustrating for any woman. In addition to the side-effects like mood swings and cravings, it can cause great physical pain too. The most common source of pain is cramps. Menstrual cramps don’t follow a pattern either: some women get them with every one of their periods, others might experience them variably. We have summarized some tips that you can bring into use to soothe the rather irritating pain:
- Make medicines a last resort. Place heating pads on the region where cramps are most severe and lie down. It is best to lie down on your stomach for this remedy to work. Heat can soothe the cramps more effectively when combined with body heat. However, any position in which you can lie down comfortably for a considerable amount of time should do fine.
- Make physical activity a part of your life. This is a long-term solution for cramps. It has been reported that woman who work out three to four times a week hardly get cramps at all. So take a vigorous walk, be it on the treadmill or in the park, every day. It is not an immediate solution, but can immensely benefit you in the long run.
- Multi-vitamins are necessary in your diet for these cramps to subside. Choose multi-vitamins that contain calcium and zinc too. These two can work together with the vitamins to vastly benefit each system of your body. Though it is probably best to stick to a balanced diet; tablets will be unnecessary if you do that as you will get every nutrient in your diet in exactly the right configuration.
- Disposable heating pads are preferable if you travel a lot or are simply planning a vacation that clashes with your period. Make sure the adhesive part stays in contact with the source of pain. The pad, being air activated, can function without you monitoring it.
- Natural progesterone is another solution. It’s a pretty effective remedy because it virtually stops the cramps and their signs. It sounds impossible, but it can be done. Just make sure you have the doctor’s consent before going for this solution.
- In case heating pads become inefficient or are simply unhelpful in bringing relief, take a good painkiller. It is recommended that you ask your doctor for a suitable one; don’t go around becoming your own doctor. Taking a regular aspirin should help.
- Even if you are too conscious about your weight, eating chocolates when it is cramp time can be of help in minimizing the pain. A bubble bath or two would be a great idea as well. Neither of the two actually act on the pain itself; they just soothe down the senses which in turn makes it easier for you to put the pain in the back of your head.
- Discuss with your friends all the possible solutions that may be helping them reduce cramps. Some explanation might be of help to you if you are lucky enough.
- Make sure you get yourself acquainted with all the possible side-effects of a medicine before you take it. Compare it for safety with other similar medicines and choose carefully.
