How to Counter Menstrual Cramps

Experiencing menstrual cramps (also referred to as Dysmenorrhea) is a medical condition in women where they feel pain around their pelvic area that may sometimes extend to the thighs and calf muscles. This usually happens during or prior to a menstrual period. The intensity varies in every woman. We have compiled a few solutions that can help you cope with menstrual cramps that become too frustrating.

Drink Ginger Tea Before:

It is documented that ginger has been used by people of all ages as a very useful herbal medicine. It is a plant root used for the treatment of many different diseases in a natural way. It is also rich in gingerol – a substance known to restrict prostaglandin production. As prostaglandin is the main culprit in menstrual cramps, ginger can actually be very effective in stopping them.  Be it in the form of tea, gingerbreads or any other form that you prefer. You can easily make ginger tea by boiling two tablespoons of grated ginger in a cup of hot water. Remove the container from the stove once the ginger boils, (do this quickly to retain all enzymes). Let the mixture brew for around 15-20 minutes to extract maximum flavor, add lemon juice and sweeten with sugar or honey. Taking a cup of ginger tea twice a day is good for soothing the pelvis as it eases abdominal muscle pain.

Heating Pad on Lower Back:

Using a heating pad can relieve the cramps by providing heat pressure to the source of the pain. This method soothes the uterus quite effectively, and helps ease the pain.

Massage:

Menstrual cramps normally take their toll on the lower back and the abdominal region. A simple way to deal with the cramps is a Massage. Be it with the help of a massage therapist or by yourself, make sure you lie flat and let your body relax. If done effectively, this can work wonders in relieving the pain. In case you plan to do it yourself, here are the steps. Lie down flat on a comfortable surface and allow your body to relax. Place your palms on the lower abdomen and move them in anticlockwise circular motion. Expand gradually to the whole of your abdomen.

Painkillers, a last resort:

There are certain over-the-counter pain killers which can be used to relieve the pain such as Ibuprofen. It is strongly recommended that the painkillers be used only when the pain becomes too severe to bear. There is a high risk of side effects, so it’s best to avoid them as much as possible.

Exercise Regularly:

Regular exercise is the key to good overall health. It is also advisable for women having menstrual problems. Many studies have shown that menstrual cramps become less prominent if the muscles are flexible and healthy. That can only happen when they are exercised on a regular basis. Menstrual cramps were seen to be more prominent in women who had exercising high up on their list of priorities. Excessive exercise is not recommended as that too poses risk to health; the best way is to exercise in a health-oriented way so that your body doesn’t become too dehydrated. All these can aggravate menstrual cramps so it is best to avoid them. This slight modification in a woman’s lifestyle can prove to be very beneficial in the long run. Take balanced diet every day. Make sure you’re consuming just the right amount of each nutrient that the body requires. It’s trivial to keep exercising as well. You may take advice from a nutritionist, but most can manage pretty well on their own unless they target drastic weight loss.
